On the 33rd episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I'm delighted to be joined by David Dunn. David describes himself as an alcoholic prison leaver trying to be the change he wants to see in the world. He is the CEO & Founder of Release Mates CIC, a group that brings positive change to individuals in the immediate hours following their release from prison.
In this episode, David shares his inspirational journey from hitting rock bottom with addiction in prison to finding the courage to make a change, and ultimately dedicating himself to serving others who are in a similar situation to where he once was.
We delve into the roles that spirituality, nature, being of service to others, honesty, and human connection played in this journey. Additionally, we discuss the significance of letting go of control and how this shift transformed his experience of life.
If you are currently facing a difficult period in your life or struggling to find meaning and purpose, there is a wealth of valuable insights in this conversation. David is incredibly honest and open about how his life turned around, sharing many profound and noteworthy perspectives on life, regardless of your current circumstances.
The weekly clip from the podcast (4 mins), my weekly reflection (1 mins), the full podcast (60 mins), and the weekly questions all follow below.

2. My weekly reflection
My main reflections this week are thinking how lucky I am, how much a boss my wife is, how energetic yet simultaneously tired I am, and how calm yet somehow on edge I feel! My first child arrived a few days ago almost 3 weeks early, all is good with mother and baby, and although we were mostly prepared, there were a few things left on the to-do list ahead of the expected due date. Writing up these weekly reflections was one of them while I take a few weeks off to hang out with the family. Normal service will resume next week with these weekly reflections!

4. This week’s Questions
Is there a challenging period in your life that you navigated that has given you a clear insight as to what you want to do with your life?
What have you come through in your life that, on reflection, you are not quite sure how you managed to? Does this give you optimism for what you can handle in future?
About Me
I am a Coach based in Berlin, via Dublin, Ireland. I left behind a 15-year career in Capital Markets after I became extremely curious around answering some of the bigger questions in life. I started this project in 2021, for which I’ve now interviewed over 150 people, to provide people with the space to reflect on their own lives and to create content that would spark people’s own inquiry into this question. I am also trying to share more genuine expressions of the human experience, beyond the facades we typically project.
